How to brand yourself?

Treat yourself as a brand. You have to pay great effort in order to build it up. However, it will be your own legend once you succeed.

Developing a personal brand is similar to product branding. The overall goal with branding is to differentiate yourself in the market so you can attain your goal. The process includes defining your brand and its attributes, positioning your brand in a different way than your competitors and then managing all aspects of your personal brand.

Before building your own brand, let’s work through these five steps first.

  • What is your own market sector?

Be specific and clearly define your goals and objectives.

Who you want to be in 5 years to 10 years? Billionaires? Entrepreneur? Philanthropist? Political Figure? First step, you have to set a target for yourself, “Who you wanna be?”

  • Conduct a specific research for yourself

How are those who have made it to where you want to be conducted their personal branding efforts? What can you learn from what others are doing, be their efforts good or bad? Who are your biggest competitors? What did they do to brand themselves?

  • What is your USP ?

What is your USP (unique selling proposition) to yourself?

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all. You would never begin marketing a business before you’ve determined the product and its unique value in the marketplace. Or you might, but it probably wouldn’t work out so well. It is the synthesis of competitive advantage. Think about what is your value in the market or how do you create your own value in the market. Treat yourself like a brand and conduct a personal S.W.O.T. analysis. Strengthen your strengths and reduce your weaknesses. Create your own value and there will be less substitutes in the market.

  • Make your brand popular by telling your own story

A brand usually came with a brand story with a signature style. For example: how hard to achieve success, what is the inspiration behind and also the goodwill of the brand. It means that we need to build our personal style, like what obstacles have I overcome? What desirable goals have I reached? Cultivate your moral character and develop your reputation.

Always come with your own story and leave people impressed.

  • Managing your own brand

If you want to manage your brand, you have to manage yourself. It’s the key of a personal brand to success. You might have to spend your whole life to maintain it. Your personal brand would be the only career for your lifetime. A successful brand would be a legend to your next generation.
